Health Insurance Premiums Going Up in 2025

Premiums will increase by an average of 9.4% in 2025 for small group employer plans (50 or fewer employees), according to the Maine Bureau of Insurance. Average rate increases range from 7.1% to 13.1% for the three insurers (Anthem, Maine Community Health Options, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care) that cover over 90% of the small group market.  Actual rates for small employers will vary based on firm location, workforce ages, selected plan design and other factors. This is the second year of rates since Maine merged the individual and small group markets.  Individual market rates will increase by an average of 8.6% in 2025. The approved increases for 2025 are notably lower than the 14.5% average initially requested in the small group market and 14.2% in the individual market. Information about rates and consumer guides can be found on the Bureau of Insurance website. www.maine.gov/pfr/insurance Health insurance cost continues to be the number one chronic issue for small business owners, a position it has held since 1986, according to the 2024 edition of NFIB’s “Small Business Problems & Priorities” nationwide survey of small business owners. www.nfib.com/foundations/research-center/
