Legislation will improve the tipped wage & earned sick time laws

Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director lauded House Bills 4001 and 4002, legislation that will make changes to the tipped wage and earned sick time laws set to take effect on February 21, 2025, after a Michigan Supreme Court ruling regarding “adopt and amend”.

“NFIB would like to thank Speaker Hall and the bill’s sponsors, Rep. John Roth (R-104) and Rep. Jay DeBoyer (R-63) for the quick action of turning in House Bills 4001 and 4002. We are grateful that the new House majority has made this their number one priority, taking swift action to move these crucial pieces of legislation,” said Fisher.

NFIB was disappointed that no action was taken during the lame duck session, despite bipartisan support.

Fisher continued, “Without these commonsense changes, big and small business owners will be forced to make changes resulting in employees across Michigan losing valuable time off due to the burdensome restrictions and regulations in the current law. Small business owners who already have very little margin may be forced to either eliminate jobs or close altogether.”

“Likewise, restaurants who are struggling to survive the increases in food costs may not be able to survive the increased costs for both servers and the earned sick time laws, while servers themselves will likely see a decrease in income.”

“We hope legislators from both parties will come together in the first two months of this session to help small business owners and their employees.”
