NFIB Encouraged by Jones’ Income Tax Reform Proposal

January 6, 2026

The plan would help small businesses by reducing or eliminating the state income tax

NFIB State Director Hunter Loggins says Georgia’s small business owners are encouraged by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’ proposal to study the feasibility of eliminating the state income tax.

The proposal would reduce or phase out state income taxes on the first portion of earnings for many Georgians. Loggins said that kind of reform could provide meaningful relief for small business owners who are struggling with higher costs, inflation, and workforce challenges.

“Most small businesses pay taxes through the owner’s personal income tax,” he said. “Lowering or eliminating income taxes on the first dollars earned would help entrepreneurs reinvest in their businesses, hire workers, and plan for the future.”

Loggins cautioned that any tax reform should be fiscally responsible and sustainable, and he urged lawmakers to avoid placing the burden of lost revenue on the backs of small businesses through higher sales taxes, property taxes, or additional fees.

“Georgia has a strong reputation as a place to do business,” he said. “Innovative tax reform can help keep the state competitive while supporting job creation and economic growth on Main Street.”
