Only congressional contests are on hold
Early voting is underway across Louisiana for most races and ballot measures on the May 16 primary ballot, but congressional contests are on hold.
Gov. Jeff Landry issued an executive order suspending the state’s primary elections for U.S. House seats as lawmakers work to redraw congressional district maps following a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
Those elections, originally scheduled for May 16 with a runoff on June 27, will be rescheduled.
The suspension applies only to U.S. House races. All other contests and ballot items will proceed as planned. Early voting began on May 2 and ends on May 9.
The action follows the court’s April 29 decision in the case of Louisiana v. Callais, which declared the state’s current congressional map unconstitutional. State officials said holding elections under the invalid map could undermine the integrity of the process.
