Victories

Streamlining Municipal Business Licensing

More than 250 Washington Cities and towns require a business license. You can now go to 1 of 2 online portals where you can obtain or renew your business licenses. These cities also have a 2 year window to establish a statewide standard for requiring local licenses, with the goal of eliminating them for infrequent out of town sales, deliveries, service calls or other activities.

Small Business Bill of Rights Inventory

NFIB is working to ensure that you know your rights when the government comes to your business. We wrote and passed a bill requiring six agencies to identify your rights and protections when subject to an audit, inspection or other enforcement action. The state Attorney General will also recommend ways to improve and standardize the notice you recieve in advance or at the time of the agency visit.

Ban the Box

NFIB again single-handedly defeated legislation to prohibit you from inquiring about an applicant’s criminal history. NFIB will continue to defend your ability to manage your workforce and protect your employees and customers, as well as fight against needless costs to your hiring process.

Challenges

Battles at the Ballot Box

NFIB will continue to fight intitiatives in upcoming elections for carbon tax regulations, restrictive scheduling, paid vacation leave and even income tax ballot measures.

Piece Economy and Independent Contractors

Lawmakers are discussing ways to treat the internet and app-based services that link customers with independent service-providers in an employer/ employee relationship. Considering all costs involved, NFIB will continue to fight any market interference and excessive regulation as it simply drives up costs, discourages entrepreneurship and eliminates choice and competition.
