NFIB/Texas 2015 Victories and Challenges

Date: August 03, 2015 Last Edit: April 06, 2016

VICTORIES

  • Franchise Tax Relief

?Secured a 25% permanent franchise tax rate reduction for all NFIB/Texas members in Texas, including an EZ tax computation option for business owners with revenue of $20 million or less.

?Kept the one million dollar small business tax exemption in place.

  • Property Tax Relief

?Increased homestead exemptions on school property taxes from $15,000 to $25,000.

?Secured prohibiting a governing body from raising property taxes without a majority citizen vote.

  • Employment

?Defeated legislation that would have extended the amount of time for filing a wage claim from 180 days to 2 years.

?Defeated legislation that would have required employers who do not carry Workers’ Compensation Insurance to carry a $200,000 life insurance policy on each employee.

?Defeated legislation that would have allowed an employee to sue an employer for alleged wage discrimination at any point in time—even 20 years post-employment.

?Defeated legislation that would have required employers, as a condition of doing business in Texas, to raise their minimum wage to $10.10 per hour and would have allowed counties to raise the minimum wage even beyond that.

?Further tightened up unemployment compensation benefits eligibility, incentivizing unemployed individuals to return to the work force.

CHALLENGES

  • Completely repeal the onerous franchise tax.
  • Stop government in Texas from assisting unions who organize against business owners—intimidating and bullying their employees to unionize.
  • Eliminate inventory tax for items being held for resale.
  • Continue to fight against legislation that would create more unlawful employment practices and causes of action against small business owners and limit government interference in the employer/employee relationship, including mandated paid leave and mandated wage increases.
