NFIB Calls on Department of Labor to Maintain Flexibility on Small Business Paid Leave Mandates

Date: April 04, 2020

Small Business Legal Center applauds DOL for efforts to keep process streamlined

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 4, 2020) — NFIB, the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, issued the following statement from Small Business Legal Center Executive Director Karen Harned regarding the ongoing push by some lawmakers to impose stricter paid leave mandates on small businesses:

“If there is anything to be learned from this past week, it is that Washington is quick to impose mandates on small businesses, but slow to provide relief when they need it most. In a time when America’s smallest businesses are struggling to keep their doors open and provide for their employees, the paid leave mandates can be crushing.

“However, we appreciate the Department of Labor’s efforts to soften the new mandate’s blow by not overcomplicating the process with burdensome paperwork and unnecessary requirements. In a week that started out hopeful for many small businesses, but ended with their frustration at the slow and disjointed opening of the PPPL program, it is helpful that DOL has been working hard to clarify how these mandates will be implemented.”
