Small Business Reacts to Governor Newsom’s State of the State

SACRAMENTO, Calif., February 12, 2019 – Following Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of the State Address, NFIB’s California State Director John Kabateck issued the following statement:

“Today, small business owners were pleased to hear Governor Gavin Newsom provide a sobering assessment of California’s out-of-control High-Speed Rail project, and our dire need to address CEQA in order to increase housing supply. Governor Newsom appropriately pointed out that High-Speed Rail costs too much with no realistic path to moving Californians from San Francisco to San Diego, and the need to severely limit the spending and scope of the project. NFIB small business owners were also happy to hear the Governor call on the legislature to finally expedite judicial review of CEQA lawsuits for housing, rather than just for building athletic stadiums.

“NFIB was troubled by the fact that the mention of ‘small business’ was notably absent from his 45-minute speech, especially when at the same time, Governor Newsom denounced President Trump for not once mentioning climate change in his State of the Union. We hope the needs and perspective of small business owners are not missing in his policy priorities as we move forward into a very busy year for policymakers.”
