Small Business Reacts to Governor Newsom’s Budget Announcement

SACRAMENTO, Calif., January 10, 2019 –
Following Governor Gavin Newsom announcing his 2019-20 state budget proposal, NFIB’s California State Director John Kabateck issued the following statement:

“Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a state budget outlining $209 billion in spending, mixed with important investments to pay down debts and pensions, while also offering one-time spending on various government programs. Small business owners and taxpayers in general understand that ever-growing state spending only furthers the appetite to raise taxes. Our members also understand the challenges associated with ‘one-time spending’ as it creates natural pressure to reallocate much of this spending in the future on those constituencies.

“NFIB small business members are pleased to see $13 billion of investments into budget resiliency, including $4 billion toward outstanding budget debt and nearly $5 billion toward the state rainy day fund. Our members also hope to see greater restraint as the budget negotiation process begins, since legislators have already proposed over $40 billion in new spending in just the first month of the legislative session.”
