S & K Asphalt and Concrete was founded in 1988 by Nick
Skeriotis. He and his wife, Gina still run the business today. They have been members of NFIB since 1999 when
one of NFIB’s field sales representatives knocked on their door and sold them
on what NFIB stands for.
Nick started as a mechanic, working for the city of Akron
when he was in high school, and started S & K Asphalt as a side business for
some extra income in the evenings and on weekends. After just one year as a business owner, Nick
resigned from the city in 1989 to run S & K Asphalt and Concrete full time.
S & K Asphalt and Concrete is a full service
construction management provider that offers top quality services such as
paving, resurfacing, repairs, and sealing. They are currently serving all of
Northeastern Ohio.
S & K Asphalt currently employs around 40 workers to
help meet the demands of a growing customer base that is now 80% commercial and
20% residential work. The asphalt and
concrete industry has become highly competitive. Finding employees is always a challenge. Additionally, S & K Asphalt and Concrete
face additional burdens that include dealing with the EPA and workers’ compensation
insurance that impact the bottom line.
Nick has been highly supportive of NFIB, saying, “I see your
efforts and appreciate your work on issues important to small-business owners.” Since joining he has become an active member attending
NFIB/Ohio’s Akron Area Action Council and Small Business Day at the
Capitol. He also participates in other groups
like the Associated Builders and Contractors, the Better Business Bureau, and
the local Akron Chamber, citing “…If businesses stick together, things get
done.”
Nick also enjoys NFIB’s views on politics and business as
well as our mix of issues, “You’re not afraid to fight,” he said of NFIB. Nick was also inspired to run for the Ohio
Statehouse in the 75th district in this past election as the
Republican candidate. He was endorsed by
the NFIB/Ohio SAFE Trust as the candidate who would be most effective on
business issues.
