Gov. Murphy announced at his news conference today that he will make $25 million available in rental payment grants he believes help landlords and their tenants and prevent evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program is only for small rental apartment buildings with 3 to 10 units, and grants would cover the period from April to July. Landlords accepting overdue rent through the program would have to drop late fees and penalties.
The funding comes from federal CARE’S Act funding. An eviction moratorium and a rent freeze order is currently in effect and would end two months after the end of the declared State of Emergency in New Jersey.
Applications are being taken from landlords between 19 and 26 and those receiving grants will be chosen randomly. There is no limit on grants, but they can not be seasonal or vacation rentals.
