Small Business Owners Speak Out at 2023 NFIB Nevada Small Business Day

Date: May 11, 2023

Top state officials, Main Street entrepreneurs exchange thoughts and information on the pressing issues

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) hosted its annual Nevada Small Business Day on Monday, May 8, inviting small business owners from across the state to gather and learn more about how NFIB is advocating on their behalf and working hard for pro-small business policies in the State Capitol.

This was the first in-person Nevada small business day since 2019, after the COVID-19 Pandemic required a virtual meeting.

NFIB Nevada State Director Tray Abney kicked off Small Business Day with an update on state legislative and regulatory priorities, including advocacy efforts surrounding taxes, labor, regulatory reform, healthcare and competitiveness.

Addressing the attendees were:

  • Lt. Gov. Stavros Anthony on how he’s working to make the Nevada Office of Small Business Advocacy permanent
  • State Sen. Ira Hansen, who spoke about how he’s fighting to make it easier for small businesses to operate in Nevada
  • Madeline Burak, legislative director for Gov. Joe Lombardo.

Also meeting with small business owners were:

  • Karen Coe, assistant director of the Nevada Small Business Development Center
  • Sarah Johnson, director of the Nevada Lt. Governor’s Office of Small Business Advocacy.

Many attendees noted that they were wary of a law passed last year that gives the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) an additional $80 billion, mostly for enforcement expansion. The plans for how that money will be used are particularly worrisome to small businesses, and NFIB has advocated for removing funding for the IRS enforcement and instead directs it to prioritize serving taxpayers rather than focusing on expanded enforcement efforts.

Nevada Small Business Day gave our members another opportunity to interact, connect and collaborate with each other and hear from leaders dedicated to making Nevada a stronger small business-friendly state. If you are not an NFIB member, consider joining here.
