Small Business Reacts to Gov. Hogan’s State of the State Address
Focus on Tax relief and workforce issues are welcome by Maryland’s family businesses

ANNAPOLIS, Jan. 30, 2019 – NFIB, the leading small business association with thousands of members in Maryland, reacted to Gov. Larry Hogan’s State of the State address today. The following comments may be attributed to Mike O’Halloran, NFIB’s state director in Maryland.

On targeted tax relief for small businesses:

“It’s refreshing to hear Gov. Hogan say that small business owners will be one of the targeted groups to receive tax relief, and you can be sure any money they receive will be invested back into their business. It is likely to spur expansion, additional job creation, and the purchase of new equipment, which will further boost the state economy. We saw great optimism among small business owners when the federal government cut taxes for pass-through companies and witnessed a surge in growth and hiring. The same can be expected at the state level.”

On increasing workforce development:

“The latest NFIB Jobs report shows that 39 percent of the small businesses surveyed reported being unable to find qualified applicants for openings. We are pleased that Gov. Hogan is focused on addressing that problem and his desire to improve workforce development. We look forward to details about how it will connect those who need training and a job with the types of vacancies that currently exist at small Maryland businesses.”
