Why Your Vote in the Iowa Primary Election Is Vital

Date: May 11, 2018

Primary Election Day is June 5

Iowa voters will decide the party nominees for Governor, Congress, and the state Legislature on Tuesday, June 5. By extension, that means taxes, regulations, health care, court nominations, labor policies, and many other issues that affect your business are also on the ballot.

We know that you’ve been following the issues and that you plan to vote. We’re also counting on you to multiply the Small Business Vote by talking to your employees, friends, community leaders, and neighbors about how important it is for them to place small business at the center of the election this year.

You have a lot more political influence than you may realize, and we’re urging you to use it this year.

We hope that you find this voting notice useful. It’s one of the many ways that NFIB educates its members on the candidates, the issues, and all the important information that you need as a voter.

Employee Education

Political issues and campaigns can be difficult to discuss in a business environment. As the business owner, you do not want to impose your political views on your employees. However, you may want to offer the same factual information that you were armed with in making your decision on who to vote for or what issue to support. There are many ways to communicate this information. Hold staff meetings to discuss business issues, the election and the importance of voting. In your break-room, set up a bulletin board with key election dates, voter registration, and absentee ballot forms, polling location information and information about the candidates. Add a feature to your employee newsletter highlighting the upcoming elections and small-business issues and important dates. Include reminders in payroll stuffers on voter registration and absentee ballot deadlines. The key is finding the appropriate format that best suits your business and employees.

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

DO base all of your information on facts surrounding an election – not your personal views.

DO allow your employees to take personal time off to volunteer with a campaign of their choice or at the polls on Election Day.

DO share issue-related information from NFIB with your employees such as voting records, issue positions, news articles. You can find this information at NFIB.com.

DO encourage employees to financially support the candidate of their choice or a political effort they support.

DO encourage your employees to register to vote, be informed, stay involved and vote.

DON’T tell your employees who to vote for.

DON’T give your employees paid time off to volunteer for any campaign. Employees may elect to use vacation time or unpaid leave to do so.

DON’T reimburse employees for their political contributions or require them to make contributions to a political campaign.

DON’T require employees to participate in the political process or single out employees based on their involvement or lack thereof.

Be sure to proudly share that you’re a #SmallBizVoter on social media!

Thanks,

Matt Everson, State Director for NFIB in Iowa
