Election Brief for Pennsylvania NFIB Members

Date: November 14, 2018

Eighty-seven percent of candidates endorsed by small business succeeded!

Despite the pronouncements of a Blue Wave on Election Day last week results in Pennsylvania overall were somewhat mixed. In total, NFIB PA PAC’s success rate for its endorsed candidates in the state was 87%. At the statewide level, NFIB-endorsed candidates Scott Wagner and Lou Barletta were not able to overcome the incumbent Governor and Senator. Legislative races had mixed results, but overall, incumbents did well, with a few exceptions. Republicans retain control of both houses of the state General Assembly, though by narrower margins.

Pennsylvania’s Congressional delegation will now be split 9-9, with three net pickups by Democrats, contributing to their new majority in the U.S. House. The Commonwealth will start next year with seven new members of Congress, three Republicans and four Democrats. NFIB-endorsed candidates won nine House races, with endorsed candidates losing the races in the 7th, 8th, and 17th districts.

At the moment, the State Senate looks to be 28-21, with Republicans retaining the majority (the open seat is a result of Reschenthaler winning his Congressional race in the 14th district). Republicans lost 2 incumbent Senate members. Thirteen of fourteen NFIB PAC-endorsed candidates, all incumbents, won their Senate races.

A few races in the State House that are still close, but results are leaning toward about a 110-93 Republican majority. Republicans lost seven incumbent House members, and Democrats lost one incumbent. Eighty-nine of NFIB’s 99 endorsed candidates in the House had a good night and came away winners.

All eight NFIB members currently serving in the state legislature won reelection, and a new NFIB member will now serve with Barb Gleim’s win in the 199th House district.
