The National Federation of Independent Business, West Virginia’s and the nation’s leading small-business association, today endorsed U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito for the U.S. Senate. The endorsement was announced at an NFIB event at Quality Machine Co. Inc., an NFIB member business in Bridgeport.
“Our members support the candidates who support small business, and Representative Capito’s record speaks for itself,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB vice president for Political and Grassroots. “She’s stood with our members on issues ranging from the repeal of Obamacare’s employer mandate to promoting new energy solutions, which will reduce overhead costs for our members.
“She’s done an outstanding job in the House of Representatives, supporting NFIB’s position on key votes 93 percent of the time, and we know she’ll continue to support West Virginia’s small businesses in the Senate.”
In the House, Capito has stood with NFIB and its members in opposing the devastating Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. She also understands that, although full repeal of the health-care law is unlikely during the current administration, Congress can make changes that would greatly reduce the burdens on West Virginia’s small, family businesses. To that end, Capito has co-sponsored legislation to repeal the annual Health Insurance Tax, or HIT, a tax on providers that’s estimated to cost families an extra $500 a year.
“Representative Capito’s commitment to protecting free enterprise is second to none,” said Gil White, state director of NFIB/West Virginia. “Her work on behalf of small business hasn’t wavered during her 14 years in the House, but if we’re going to finally fix things for small business, we need leaders like Shelley Moore Capito in the U.S. Senate.”
NFIB has 1,600 dues-paying members in West Virginia, representing a cross section of the commonwealth’s economy. Capito’s endorsement comes from NFIB’s SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the association’s political action committee, and is based on positions regarding key small-business issues including health care, taxes, and labor and regulatory issues.
Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members to help turn out the small-business vote for Capito in the May 13 primary and again in November.
