Virginia’s 3-Day Sales Tax Holiday a Great Time to Support Small Businesses

Date: August 03, 2020

Runs August 7 -9 this year

RICHMOND (August 3, 2020) – NFIB encourages consumers to take advantage of the state’s upcoming sales tax-free holiday that runs from August 7 – 9 this year. That annual event allows for the purchase of a wide variety of energy-saving and water saving appliances, shoes, clothing, school supplies, and hurricane preparation supplies like generators and chain saws.

“This has been a challenging spring and summer for local retailers struggling to recover from the economic shutdown and a great time to support them as they do come back,” said NFIB’s Virginia State Director Nicole Riley. “Not only did small business owners lose a lot of revenue in recent months, but they also had to spend additional dollars to pay for equipment and supplies to protect customers and employees from the coronavirus when reopening.”

The dollar limits for eligible items can be found here. For full details and rules click here.

“If you want to go out and visit your local stores during the sales tax-free week, also consider visiting a small independently owned restaurant for lunch,” added Riley. “Those who prefer not to go in person can often find small local businesses have websites where you can order goods online.”

Small businesses empower small communities all across Virginia. According to a study from American Express, 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community.
