It Ain't Over Till It's Over

Date: June 13, 2017

Greetings NFIB/Texas Members,

The 85th (regular) Session of the Texas Legislature has finally adjourned “sine die,” however Governor Abbott has called a Special Session of the 85th Legislature to act on several measures that many believe are must pass bills that continue several necessary functions of state government. These bills are commonly referred to as “Sunset legislation” as Texas lawmakers routinely review and rework state agencies every few years.

This session was not so special for the small business community as no general tax relief for businesses was enacted, homeowners didn’t receive property tax relief, and the state of Texas continues to partner with and support unions by collecting their dues for them. There were a few nuggets of hope and good government in passage of some solid education and workforce development legislation along with lawsuit abuse measures that made the session not a total wash for the small business community.

In the coming days and weeks NFIB/Texas staff will be producing an end of session report that will detail all the items addressed by legislators. Be sure to watch for that and let us know if you see any topics or trends happening across the state that may need addressing by future legislatures.

As always thank you for putting your trust in us and allowing us “To promote and protect your right to own, operate and grow your businesses.”

Thank you,

Will Newton
NFIB/Texas Executive Director
