A letter from your NFIB/Texas Executive Director Will Newton

Greetings NFIB members and friends,

While the Texas Legislature is not currently in session there is still plenty of activity around Austin and soon there will be many opportunities for NFIB staff and members to engage in the lawmaking process. In October 2017 Speaker Joe Straus issued the Interim Charges for the Texas House of Representatives and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick issued his Interim Charges for the Texas Senate. Both bodies are expected to take up these issues soon and begin developing legislation for the 86th Texas Legislature in January 2019. As you may know, Texas Legislature meets for only 140 days every odd year so it’s important that public policy ideas be thoroughly discussed and vetted so that the lawmaking process moves a little bit smoother.

Within these charges will be all kinds of public policy issues that can and do have a direct impact on your business and maybe even your ability to stay in business. Reform in taxation, regulation, lawsuits and issues relating to the employer-employee relationship (think minimum wage increases or mandated paid sick leave) are some of the topics to be studied. We need you to keep up to date through this e-newsletter, our website, and our action alerts for opportunities to get active and be involved in this important process. Remember, no one tells the small business story better than you. We must have an active NFIB member base so that we can help to protect your right to own, operate and grow your business.

Thank you,

Will Newton
NFIB/Texas Executive Director
