NFIB members asked to join next meeting November 7
The first meeting of the Utah Tax Restructuring and Equalization Task Force was held May 30, and since that time numerous public meetings were held seeking Utahns input on the biggest tax overhaul in state history. At the last meeting October 22, the task force produced draft proposals that will be drafted into legislation and then considered at the next task force meeting on Nov. 7, 2019.
“This undertaking was nothing less than the complete overhaul of the way state and local governments collect taxes and spend revenues,” said NFIB Utah State Director Candace Daly. “It promised to be unprecedented in scope, and it delivered. Now, small-business owners need to acquaint themselves with the details and lobby for or against what will be of benefit and what will be harmful. I urge them to attend the task force’s next meeting.”
The next meeting will be November 7 in the State Capitol. In the executive summary leading off the task force’s recommendations, it stated, “This proposal would take many steps to address the state’s structural revenue imbalance. The result of these policy changes would be a tax structure with increased flexibility for the Legislature in choosing how to fund state programs and would address several policy concerns.”
Daly said the task force left nothing untouched in the wide net it cast, pointing to such things as a call for the removal of the 4.85 percent sales tax on goods such as feminine hygiene products and a new initiative to address inter-generational poverty.
