NFIB State Director Ben Homeyer says this year’s sales tax holiday on back-to-school supplies and clothes comes at a critical time for South Carolina’s small businesses.
“COVID-19 has really taken a toll on local retailers,” Homeyer said. “They had to close or operate at reduced capacity to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, and they’ve had to invest in additional equipment and supplies to keep customers and employees safe.
“Small business is the foundation of South Carolina’s economy,” Homeyer said. “By supporting local merchants this weekend, people can take advantage of some terrific deals while helping support the local economy.”
According to a report by American Express, 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community. It also creates an additional 50 cents in local business activity as employees and owners purchase local goods and services.
This year’s sales tax holiday on clothes, school supplies, and computers is Aug. 7-9. “Of course, you don’t have to have a child in school to take advantage of the deals,” Homeyer said. “This weekend will be a good time for anyone to shop for clothes or buy laptops or computers so they can work from home or run their business.”
