NFIB State Director Ben Homeyer says the upcoming back-to-school sales tax holiday is a good opportunity for people to support local businesses as they recover from the COVID-19 economic downturn.
South Carolina’s sales tax holiday on clothes, school supplies, and computers is Aug. 6-8.
“This is a critical time for South Carolina’s small businesses,” Homeyer said. “Business may be better than it was a year ago, but it’s still not what it was before the pandemic. Shopping small this weekend is a good way to support the local businesses that support their communities throughout the year.”
Small businesses account for 99.4% of all employers in the state, and they employ 43.8% of the state’s workforce, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. A study by American Express found that 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community and creates an additional 50 cents in local business activity as employees and owners purchase local goods and services.
