The state Senate has approved a bill that increases taxes on natural gas, electricity, freight transportation, and telecommunications services. NFIB is opposed to these hikes which will impact the vast majority of our Pennsylvania members. The bill will be considered by the House soon. Recently several NFIB members testified before the House Taxpayers’ Caucus about how those increased costs would hurt small business, state economic growth, and hiring.

The Senate plan calls for a 5.7-percent tax on natural gas. That hits manufacturers using natural gas for production especially hard. One NFIB member says his plant will incur a minimum of $57,000 dollars a year in increased costs as a result. Businesses that use natural gas for heating will also see their costs rise.

There is also a proposed increase in the current tax rate on electricity. The tax on freight transportation telecom services will go up by one percent.
