STATEMENT: Proposed Tax on Services Is a Tax on Small Businesses

Date: September 16, 2015

Gregg Thompson, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, issued the following statement today concerning efforts by some lawmakers to pass a tax on services and labor to offset a cut in the personal income tax rate:

“It’s hard to imagine legislation that would do more to hurt small-businesses owners, employees and their families than a tax on services and labor.

“Small-business owners know you can’t spend your way to prosperity. If lawmakers impose yet another tax on small businesses and their employees, they’re going to hurt the state’s economy and put North Carolina at a real competitive disadvantage by driving up the cost of doing business, which, in turn, is going to drive up costs for consumers and drive some entrepreneurs out of business.

“Small business is the heart and soul of North Carolina’s economy. It’s hard enough for small businesses to grow and create jobs without the General Assembly taking more of their hard-earned money in the form of costly and unnecessary taxes.

“It’s not like North Carolina is broke. We have a surplus. We have money in the bank. We don’t need to raise any taxes, especially those that affect the state’s job creators.”

“Lawmakers need to steal a page from the small-business playbook and learn the budget the money they already have. Small businesses can’t create more money out of thin air. If a small business wants to spend more money here, it knows it has to spend less money there. Our members expect the General Assembly to treat taxpayers’ money with the same care as small businesses treat theirs.”
