Erie County Announces Mask Mandate for All Indoor Activities

Date: December 02, 2021

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced a new mask mandate, effective Nov. 23rd, for staff, guests, and patrons at all indoor public locations. Indoor public locations include, but are not limited to, bars and restaurants, grocery stores, retail businesses, personal care establishments, hotels, banks, fitness centers, theatres, entertainment venues, and places of worship. Masks or face coverings may only be removed for eating and drinking, or when necessary for the service being performed (i.e. shaving or hair cut).

Impacted businesses must require employees, guests, and patrons to wear masks while indoors. Additionally, businesses must display the COVID-19 mask requirement poster in a clearly visible area, have a supply of masks available for staff, and have a written plan for implementation of the mask mandate.

The Erie County Dept. of Health is collecting complaints about businesses and/or patrons not complying with the mask mandate, and those businesses may be subject to fines or penalties.
