SANTA FE, N.M., Jan. 17, 2020—The state’s leading small-business association today announced its new leadership council, which will help direct NFIB New Mexico’s lobbying and political strategies. The new leadership councilmembers are:

  • Russell Allen of Allen Theatres, Inc. in Las Cruces
  • John Chavez of Alvarado Management LTD Co. in Albuquerque
  • Lorie Guthrie of Superiaire Technologies in Albuquerque
  • Lowell M. Irby of Lowell’s Pharmacy in Artesia
  • Gerald Lucero of Ray’s Flooring Specialists Inc. in Albuquerque
  • Nathan Manning of BeeHive Homes in Albuquerque

Members of the leadership council:

  • testify at legislative hearings involving small-business issues
  • host lawmakers for a tour of their business operations
  • assist in implementing grassroots efforts
  • help shape questions for the state ballot, the results from which are considered by lawmakers, state constitutional officers, and the heads of agencies and commissions to be the true voice of small business

“You’d be hard-pressed to find people more highly regarded than small-business owners,” said Jason Espinoza, New Mexico state director for NFIB. “In surveys conducted by Gallup, Morning Consult, and Pew, Main Street entrepreneurs rank at or near the top in the respect people have for them and the trust they place in them. But lawmakers can sometimes forget that small businesses are not smaller versions of big businesses, they have a tougher struggle in abiding by regulations, paying taxes, and meeting a payroll, so legislation beneficial for big business may not help small business. It is NFIB’s eternal mission to remind policymakers of that, and I’m proud to have six, successful small-business owners joining me in that campaign.”
