TRENTON Feb. 4, 2020 – NFIB, the leading small business association in New Jersey with thousands of members across the state, applauds Assemblyman Brian Bergen (R- District 25) for introducing legislation that would compensate small businesses with fewer than 20 employees for the time taken collecting and remitting sales taxes on behalf of the State of New Jersey (A2724).
“Small business owners wear multiple hats, not only running their business each day but also frequently acting as HR manager, bookkeeper, chief cook and bottle washer–and yet for free, they also spend additional time collecting and remitting the State of New Jersey’s sales taxes,” said NFIB’s New Jersey State Director, Eileen Kean. “It is appropriate for the state to compensate that business owner for their time and effort and we thank Assemblyman Bergen for letting these hard-working entrepreneurs know that they are appreciated.”
Under the legislation, those smaller businesses would be reimbursed either 10% of their monthly sales tax remittance or $100, whichever is less.
“After so many burdensome government mandates, taxes and fees have been imposed on New Jersey’s small businesses, it is refreshing to see a bill introduced that aims to help. These small business owners may be small individually, but together they are a powerful market force bringing much-needed revenue to the state, and this is a way of acknowledging that,” added Kean.
