New Jersey Lawmakers to Weigh Paid Sick Leave Bill

Date: March 14, 2018

New Jersey does not currently have a paid sick leave law for private employers, but that could soon change if the Legislature approves a measure being considered by the Senate.

Under the bill—a companion proposal to A-1827, introduced by Sen. Loretta Weinberg—private employers with fewer than 10 workers would have to provide them five paid sick days and employers with more than 10 workers would have to provide nine paid sick days. It would also allow employees to use these days to stay home and care for a sick child. Currently, state law grants public sector employees 15 paid sick leave days, but imposes no such regulation on private employers.

Supporters have already begun to advocate for this proposal, and the issue is expected to be supported by Gov. Phil Murphy. NFIB/NJ will be monitoring the issue closely.
