Small Business Association Applauds Gov. Sununu Veto of Minimum Wage Bill

Date: August 12, 2019

Legislation would cause job losses and reduced hours for workers it’s meant to help

CONCORD, August 9, 2019 – NFIB, the leading small business association with over a thousand members in New Hampshire, applauds Governor Chris Sununu for vetoing a bill to raise the minimum wage to $12 per hour. The following comments reacting to the veto can be attributed to Bruce Berke, state director of NFIB in New Hampshire:

“By vetoing the minimum wage bill, Governor Sununu understands the economic damage an artificial wage rate can have on both workers and small businesses in New Hampshire.   The economic reality is many small businesses simply cannot afford the increased labor costs. Business owners would be forced to eliminate entry-level positions and reduce worker hours, especially if they can’t raise prices without turning customers away. These additional costs would have fallen hardest on food service, retail, and seasonal businesses, as well as daycares and non-profits.”

“If those first jobs disappear there would be no steppingstone for young people, or those just entering the workforce, to learn important lessons about showing up on time, working as a team, and finding out how a business operates.  Currently, almost every job in New Hampshire already pays more than the minimum wage due.   As we are seeing today, a strong economy with competition naturally results in higher compensation.”

“While the intentions of the bill’s supporters may be well-intended, the people they want to help would be hurt by this legislation.”
