CARSON CITY, Nev. Nov. 23, 2020—Nevada’s leading small-business association today called for all consumer hands on deck to help bail out their Main Street shops this Saturday, November 28.

“Small businesses are all in the same boat this year – a sinking boat,” said Randi Thompson, Nevada director for NFIB, the state and nation’s leading small-business association. “Small Business Saturday was created 10 years ago to help keep afloat Main Street enterprises trapped in the middle of a recession. This year history is repeating itself. A rising tide will raise all boats, and this year we need consumers to act like a tsunami to help save thousands of local jobs!”

The governor’s recent order reducing capacity for small businesses is not helping, but consumers can – and need to – help protect their favorite small businesses by:

  • Visiting local retailers for in-person shopping, wearing a mask and keeping a safe distance
  • Ordering items over the phone for curbside pickup
  • Buying gift cards/certificates from local small businesses
  • Dining-in by making a reservation at your favorite local eatery
  • Ordering take out from local restaurants
  • Having food delivered from local restaurants

“Even in the best of times, small businesses have the thinnest of profit margins,” said Thompson. “Now those margins are emaciated and only all of us doing our part can bring some life back into the small business body.”

Background

Begun by American Express in 2010 to spur small businesses out of the recession, the annual Small Business Saturday event has been a great financial boon for Main Street enterprises. According to the 2019 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey from American Express and NFIB and figures from Adobe Analytics, Small Business Saturday outperformed both Black Friday ($5.4 billion) and Cyber Monday ($9.2 billion).
