Take Action On Small Business Issues In Missouri

After five hard and long years of effort, the Missouri General Assembly passed one of the most significant tort reform bills in recent memory. Please take a minute and thank your state senator or representative for standing up for small business by passing SB 591. If your elected official didn’t stand up for small business and voted against SB 591, let them know how you’re disappointed in their vote.

SB 591 raises the standard of proof, delays the filing of punitive damages, and in the long run, reduces the cost of litigation. Punitive damages are designed to punish and deter the conduct of the defendant. However, in Missouri, they are routinely requested when the case is filed- before guilt has been established. Small business owners are especially at risk for punitive damages, which should only be awarded AFTER fault has been determined.

The Missouri General Assembly needs to hear from the small business community on this important piece of legislation. Please take a moment to send your elected officials a message expressing thanks or disappointment. Click here to take action!
