2019 Legislature Opens with a Big Pair of Eyes Watching It

Date: January 06, 2019

A true friend of small business can be found in each ‘yes’ and ‘no’ in the roll call

A new session of the Minnesota Legislature opens this week with a big pair of eyes watching its every move and a pencil in hand marking down its every vote on issues vital to the survival of small businesses in the state.

Every elected official claims to be a friend of small business—it’s a matter of political necessity. Nearly nine in ten adults (89 percent) report a positive view of small businesses, according to Morning Consult. “These positive sentiments extend across party lines … Republicans (92 percent positive) and Democrats (90 percent positive) are united in their appreciation for small business.”

But, once elected, do legislators act as a friend of small business? At the end of each session, NFIB tallies each lawmaker’s votes on small-business issues and publishes its state voting records—the measurement of deeds, not words.
