Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave Reminder

Date: September 15, 2020

Small business owners should be aware that workers will soon be eligible to utilize family and medical leave benefits starting on January 1, 2021. At this point, employees are qualified to use medical leave for their own serious medical condition or may use family leave to care for family members in the armed services or to bond with a child. In July, the leave extends to employees taking care of a sick family member.

Employers should be cognizant of what is permissible, as well as what their responsibilities will be, under the new law. As you are already aware, financial contributions from workers and some businesses began last October into the PFML Trust Fund.

NFIB is planning two virtual meetings in late October with experts to help you better understand this new law. Please keep your calendars open the last week of October for both a morning and afternoon webinar on the new PFML program.
