Take Action: Legislative Committee to Hold Public Hearing on Fracking Regulations

The House Environment and Transportation Committee will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the Maryland Department of the Environment’s (MDE) regulations governing hydraulic fracturing on Tuesday, August 30 in McHenry.

Background: On January 9, 2015, MDE proposed oil and gas regulations for the safe and responsible extraction of natural gas by means of hydraulic fracturing. Since then, MDE has met with individual stakeholder groups and reviewed public comments on the proposal.

During the 2015 legislative session, SB409/HB449 was enacted requiring MDE to finalize regulations for hydraulic fracturing, on or before October 1, 2016. Such regulations may not become effective until October 1, 2017.

The Department produced a series of Issue Papers this past June summarizing the 2015 proposed regulations and recommended changes. These will be the subject of the public forum:
