State adds 22,200 jobs
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data last week showing that Maryland gained 22,200 jobs and the unemployment rate decreased to 6.0 percent in July. Since the beginning of the year, Maryland has gained a total of 56,800 jobs, according to the BLS. The Professional and Business Services sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 5,700 jobs.
The BLS numbers stand in contrast to NFIB’s latest monthly jobs report in which a record 49 percent of small business owners reported job openings they could not fill. Meanwhile, the same report shows 38 percent of owners raising compensation in an effort to attract qualified applicants.
NFIB continues to pursue sound policies that will connect job seekers with small business owners looking to hire.
