ANNAPOLIS
(April 5, 2016): The state’s leading small business advocacy group, the
National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is commenting on today’s
passage of mandatory paid leave out of the House.

 

“Our members
are having a difficult time watching as mandatory paid leave gets sent to the Senate for consideration. In spite
of repeatedly being warned by small business owners themselves as well as
advocacy groups like ours, some lawmakers just don’t seem to grasp the damage
they are inflicting on the small business sector when they pass harmful legislation like this,” said NFIB
Maryland representative, Mike O’Halloran. “Just the fact that they are
considering yet another mandate puts small employers on edge and makes them
question their ability to grow their business either now, or in the future.”

 

Paid leave
legislation has been debated vigorously this year
with various amendments being proposed by the business community along the way.
Unfortunately, lawmakers failed to consider nearly
all of the alternatives that those representing employers were offering.

 

“We are wholly disappointed with the product that has
passed the House. Despite the business community’s opposition to the bill, we
came to the negotiation table with responsible and reasonable amendments to
help mitigate the devastating impact of this legislation. We were ignored at
nearly every turn. With time running out on this session and given the terrible
state this bill is in, we are hopeful steadier heads will prevail in the Senate
as we ask them to leave this bill alone,” said
O’Halloran.
