NFIB’s state director for Louisiana, Dawn Starns, released the following statement today after the House Ways and Means Committee tabled a proposed state constitutional amendment centralizing Louisiana’s sales tax collection process:
“Our members are disappointed, but we aren’t giving up when it comes to bringing Louisiana’s sales tax collection into the 21st century.
“Louisiana is one of only two states without a centralized sales tax collection process. In most states, retailers send sales tax revenue to a single agency. If you’re a small business with storefronts in two or more jurisdictions and sell online, you currently face three different sales tax codes to comply with here. Not only is it confusing, but it’s also overly burdensome and costly for business which is an example why Louisiana ranks at the bottom for business climate.
“We look forward to working with the Legislature and local government to come up with a solution as we look forward to 2020.”
