Senator Hewitt Earns NFIB Guardian of Small Business Award

Date: September 14, 2016

The National Federation of Independent Business has presented state Sen. Sharon Hewitt with its coveted Guardian of Small Business Award.

The Guardian of Small Business award is the most prestigious honor that NFIB bestows on legislators in recognition of their efforts to support small business issues. The NFIB Louisiana Leadership Council, an advisory board comprised of NFIB members, voted to present the award to the legislator for supporting small-business issues in this year’s session of the General Assembly. Senator Hewitt earned a 100 percent NFIB Voting Record during the regular session.

“Senator Hewitt has proven herself to be both knowledgeable about business affairs and able to ask the important questions about proposed policies and their impact on business,” said Dawn Starns, state director of NFIB.

“As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Hewitt was engaged in the budget process and was conscience of government spending and the desire to raise additional revenues,” Starns said. “She understood the delicate balance and asked the right questions about the use of taxpayer dollars.

“Senator Hewitt also tried to find a compromise to the equal pay bill that would have made it more palatable for business. Although her amendment did not pass, we saw her take up this important cause and understand how convoluted laws can create opportunities for lawsuits against business.
“Small business needs more legislators like Sharon Hewitt,” Starns said. “That’s why we’re proud to present her with our Guardian of Small Business award.”
