NFIB is urging the House Ways and Means Committee to send a proposed state constitutional amendment centralizing Louisiana’s sales tax collection system to the floor for a vote. The committee meets at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 20.
“Our sales tax system is a mess,” said Dawn Starns, NFIB’s state director for Louisiana. “We’re one of only two states without a centralized sales tax collection system.
“In most states, stores send sales tax revenue to a single agency,” Starns said. “Louisiana has 64 parishes. Only one doesn’t have a local sales tax. That leaves 63 parishes with local sales tax collectors and over 100 different sales tax jurisdictions.
“If you’re a small business with a store in two or more jurisdictions, that makes it a lot harder and more expensive to understand and follow the rules.
“House Bill 57 is a proposed state constitutional amendment that would bring Louisiana’s sales tax structure into the 21st century,” Starns said. “It would make it easier to run a small business in Louisiana by simplifying sales tax collection.
“That’s why we’re urging the House Ways and Means Committee to pass House Bill 57 and send it to the floor for a vote.”
