NFIB Statement on End of Regular Session, Beginning of Special Session

Date: June 01, 2020

NFIB State Director Dawn Starns has released the following statement in anticipation of the end of the regular legislative session and the beginning of the special session:

“We cannot thank the leadership and members enough for their support in making the survival of Louisiana’s small businesses a top priority. They consistently opposed impractical and untenable legislation such as mandatory paid sick leave. And they supported critical legislation to establish protections against lawsuits that exploit the already devastating effects of the novel coronavirus.

“The omnibus tort reform bill includes provisions that will make it easier to own and operate a small business in Louisiana. One is the reduction in the jury trial threshold which will help end large settlements and get Louisiana off the outlier list. This is long overdue reform, and we appreciate this new legislature for coming in and getting it done.

“Our members are also grateful to the legislature for supporting the Main Street Recovery Fund. These grants will go a long way toward helping small businesses that had to close because of the deadly coronavirus. Small business is the beating heart of Louisiana’s economy, and these grants will make it easier for them to survive the sometimes frustratingly slow reopening phases.

“The legislature’s work isn’t done, though. During the special session, our members will urge their senators and representatives to approve centralized sales tax collection, abolish the inventory tax and credit program, reduce our individual income tax rates to achieve a fairer and flatter system, and improve our overall tax structure so that it doesn’t burden small business.

“It’s been a challenging spring for Louisiana’s small businesses. The special session gives the legislature a chance to finish the work it started before everything came to a grinding halt.”
