Roundhouse Update--Legislature Back in Session

Date: January 27, 2020

NFIB Small Business Day, January 30

State Director Jason Espinoza reports from Santa Fe on the small-business agenda for the legislative week ending January 24.

Last week marked the beginning of the Second Session of the 54th Legislature. This year’s 30-day legislative session is constitutionally required to focus on budget and appropriations; however, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham can add other items to the call at her discretion.

On the first day of the legislative session, the governor delivered the annual State of the State Address. In the address, she stated she wanted New Mexico to be a place “where small businesses can thrive with a strong and dynamic workforce at the ready.” Read the full text of the governor’s address here.

Through the first week, the House of Representatives introduced 274 pieces of legislation and the Senate introduced 183 pieces of legislation. Altogether, that represents more than 450 memorials, bills, constitutional amendments, and rules introduced in just the first week. The last day that legislators can introduce bills is February 5.

As of January 27, bills to mandate paid family sick leave and increase the minimum wage have not been put on the call by the governor, meaning they cannot yet be heard by the Legislature. Throughout the session, NFIB will be keeping a close eye on bills that impact small businesses.
