NFIB to Vigorously Oppose Effort to Repeal Right-To-Work

Date: January 10, 2019

NFIB’s Virginia state director, Nicole Riley, said the state’s leading small business advocacy organization will do everything it can to defeat legislation that would repeal Virginia’s status as a right-to-work state.

“Being a right-to-work state is one of the main reasons Virginia has become so attractive to employers,” Riley said. “Being a right-to-work state makes us more competitive regionally and nationally. It’s one of the things employers look at when they’re deciding whether to move or expand, and that can create more opportunities for small, locally-owned businesses.

“Big Labor says right-to-work is anti-union, but it’s not,” Riley said. “If you want to join a union, you have every right to join a union, but you don’t have to join a union to get a job and support your family. It also means you can’t be fired because you choose to join a union.

“Right-to-work means exactly what it says: You have a right to work,” Riley said. “If the General Assembly does something to change that, it’s going to make it a lot harder for Virginia to attract and keep good jobs.”
