NFIB Applauds House Vote to Stabilize Unemployment Trust Fund

Date: February 23, 2017

Brad Jones, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, Missouri’s leading small-business association, released the following statement today in response to the House vote on House Bill 288, legislation that would stabilize Missouri’s unemployment trust fund:

“On behalf of our members, I want to thank the General Assembly for voting ‘yes’ on legislation to fix Missouri’s broken Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund.

“Missouri’s Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund has gone broke in each of the past five recessions. That’s ridiculous. When the trust fund goes broke, it doesn’t help anyone. It doesn’t help the unemployed, and it doesn’t help the employers who are required by law to pay into the fund.

“By tying the number of weeks an individual can collect unemployment benefits to the actual unemployment rate, H.B. 288 will ensure that the trust fund will remain solvent, even when times are tough.

“Just as important, H.B. 288 will permit employers to recover overpayments to the unemployment trust fund stemming from an erroneous experience rating.

“H.B. 288  is a commonsense solution to a problem that has hurt employees and employers for decades. I want to thank the bill’s sponsors, Sen. Mike Kehoe and Rep. Scott Fitzpatrick, and I’m asking Governor Greitens to sign it into law as soon as possible.”
