Gov. Kim Reynolds Applauded for Addressing #1 Need of Small Businesses in Iowa--Qualified Workers

Date: January 15, 2019

Latest Survey shows small business unable to fill jobs in tight labor market

NFIB’s Iowa State Director Matt Everson reacted to the Governor’s speech and offered the following comments: “Finding qualified workers in the current tight job market is now the top concern of small businesses. Gov. Reynolds desire to expand Future Ready Iowa is a relief because small companies can’t grow or create additional jobs when they can’t find people to fill new positions. If the workforce issue is not addressed, it will put a damper on the state’s economic growth. “Right now, 39 percent of small businesses report job openings they cannot fill because they can’t find qualified applicants. There are more job openings than people looking for jobs even with an increase in wages offered. Employers can’t seem to find applicants with needed skills, so we applaud the Governor for addressing this problem and hope lawmakers will realize its importance. “Gov. Reynolds and state lawmakers deserve credit for improving Iowa’s tax climate in 2018, but there is so much more to be done this year. The state’s ranking was 45th among states for its tax climate according to the Tax Foundation, and while the reforms will help over time, Iowa wasn’t far from rock bottom. Small businesses are still overburdened by taxes and regulations so lifting that burden off their backs will also improve the state economic outlook. “The Governor presented a series of ideas today that may help a variety of small business, such as greater access to broadband for rural companies, and reduced liability for those who chose to hire employees with criminal records. We appreciate her focus on solutions to make the life of Main Street businesses easier.” For more information contact: Matt Everson, NFIB’s Iowa State Director [email protected]
