How much will workers’ compensation increases harm Florida small businesses?

That’s the question on the minds of many Sunshine State small business owners in the wake of Florida Supreme Court rulings that could cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in premium increases.

All told, the court decisions could mean a 20 percent hike in premiums, according to a recent filing with the state Office of Insurance Regulation by the National Council on Compensation Insurance.

NFIB Florida Executive Director Bill Herrle joined “Florida Workers’ Compensation Strategic Task Force” in July to tackle the public policy issue.  

The good news for NFIB/Florida members?

And a comprehensive review could be coming down the pike, too, Herrle recently told Politico.

“We certainly think we are heading toward a comprehensive review (of the workers compensation statutes) and not a surgical fix,” Herrle said. “If you open up the can of worms, you might as well look at the bottom of it.
