June 9, 2016, Tallahassee – Today, the Florida Supreme Court issued a decision
in the Bradley Westphal vs. The City of St. Petersburg case. The following is a
statement from Bill Herrle, Executive Director of NFIB/Florida on this decision’s
impact on small businesses:

“Today’s decision is just one more blow from the Supreme Court that poses
a very real threat to small business owners ability to employ Floridians. It will almost certainly cause workers’
compensation costs to increase.  Following the decision, the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) announced
they will be reevaluating their recent workers’ comp rate filing, which was
already looming over the small business community and threatening to force
skyrocketing workers’ comp rates in Florida.

“NFIB is asking NCCI and the Office of Insurance Regulation to act as quickly
as possible so that Florida business owners have a chance to do whatever they
can to meet these unexpected costs.

“Legislative
action will be required to maintain a stable workers’ compensation market for
Florida businesses.”
