SMALL BUSINESS CALLS ON SENATORS TO SUPPORT COMMON-SENSE REFORM

Date: February 27, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS (February 27, 2017): The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Indiana’s largest small business advocacy group, is calling on Senators today to support legislation that would enable small businesses to correct minor infractions before having to pay overwhelming fines and penalties imposed by state agencies.

“This bill is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to small business owners that their contribution to our communities is as valuable as many claim on the campaign trail. In the case of a first time, minor infraction, small business owners would be granted an opportunity to correct the issue prior to being hit with state-imposed fines,” according to Barbara Quandt Underwood. “Unfortunately, Indiana has become too reliant on revenue generated by these fees. We implore those on the fence regarding this measure to consider the implication to our employers and give them one chance to correct their mistakes before cashing in on their infractions.”

The third reading of Senate Bill 413, Opportunity to Correct a Violation, is scheduled to occur today. If enacted, it would require that a state agency, under certain circumstances, give a person an opportunity to correct an alleged violation of law that was discovered during an inspection. The bill’s author, Senator Koch, has been a tireless advocate for Indiana’s small business community.

“This legislation is just one more in a series of bills designed to empower our small employers and strengthen our economy. Thanks to Senator Koch’s leadership on this issue and the support of Senate leadership, our members will have the opportunity to balance employment place safety with common sense regulation,” continued Quandt Underwood. “Our small businesses are overwhelmed by a regulatory environment at both the state and federal levels and if passed, this legislation will provide much-needed relief.”
