Illinois House Passes Progressive Tax Measure

Date: June 05, 2019

The Illinois House met on Memorial Day and voted to pass Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment No. 1, Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s progressive tax plan.

NFIB State Director Mark Grant said, “Our members are deeply disappointed with the House members who voted for this job-killing tax resolution while failing to address Illinois’s need for property tax reform.

“Small business owners understand the need to address Illinois’ financial crisis, but raising taxes would make things worse, not better. Governor Pritzker’s progressive tax would hurt small businesses and their employees. Higher taxes would mean less money for them to expand their businesses and pay current employees, let alone hire additional ones.

“If this becomes law, it would deliver a one-two punch to Illinois taxpayers by hitting them with higher income taxes on top of the crushing property taxes we already pay.

“Our members do not believe that the same lawmakers and bureaucrats who got us into this mess can get us out of it simply by raising taxes.

“Our hope now is that the people of Illinois will reject this proposed amendment to the state constitution and tell their legislators to stop passing the buck and work with the small business community on a commonsense solution that addresses the state’s budget shortfall without making it even harder to do business in the State of Illinois.”
