NFIB Calls for Halt on Last-Minute Medicaid Expansion Attempt

Date: February 01, 2017

During the waning days of President Obama’s term in office, North Carolina Roy Gov. Cooper attempted to fast-track Medicaid expansion in the state, even as the effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act moved forward in Washington.

Not only was the effort not supported by the Legislature, but it has been met with a legal challenge under a 2013 state law requiring General Assembly approval for any proposal to seek Medicaid expansion. North Carolina legislative leaders sued to block federal officials from granting Gov. Cooper’s request, and a federal judge temporarily halted the expansion effort.

NFIB/NC also spoke out against it.

“Despite what the governor says, expanding Medicaid would not cure North Carolina’s ills, but it would make things worse for small business owners, their employees, and their families,” said Gregg Thompson, NFIB/NC state director. “Our small business members have looked at this issue from every perspective and believe expanding an underfunded, cumbersome, and poorly administered program like Medicaid would be irresponsible. The bottom line is this: Does anyone really believe that Washington will continue to pick up 90 percent of new costs after 2020?”
