The Small Business Challenge is a national campaign that invites lawmakers to spend a day “on the job” at a small business in their community and allows them to experience firsthand the challenges small-business owners face, including day-to-day management, compliance, and tax issues.
Tillis worked on a lighting fixture and met with local NFIB members to talk about the challenges they face owning and operating their businesses.

“Being in the Senate, you can only get so much down in the vacuum of the Capitol,” he said. “When you’re out and talking to business owners, you’re hearing the challenges that they have with regulatory burdens, with tax burdens. You can take that information and go back and create policies like the tax reform bill that’s had an enormous impact on small businesses.”
